Purpose

Design for the constituent parts of an iron support post for the organ, St Peter's, Walworth, London, October 1823 (1)

Notes

A notable feature of Soane's churches is the use of exposed metal elements, especially columns which are placed to support the organ gallery. Whereas, the iron columns supporting the arcade were covered with plaster. Soane had been ambiguous on the matter of exposed iron-work. In a lecture draft for the Royal Academy in 1811, Soane criticised exposed iron works including the Wearmouth Bridge, near Sunderland, for which Soane had been a great supporter to its initiator, his friend Rowland Burdon, (SM Archives MBiii/11/1), and was completed in 1796. Yet, Soane used exposed iron work for the pillars supporting the organ, and those supporting the galleries on the second and ninth bays (SM 54/6/19, 21).

Sir John Soane's collection includes some 30,000 architectural, design and topographical drawings which is a very important resource for scholars worldwide. His was the first architect’s collection to attempt to preserve the best in design for the architectural profession in the future, and it did so by assembling as exemplars surviving drawings by great Renaissance masters and by the leading architects in Britain in the 17th and 18th centuries and his near contemporaries such as Sir William Chambers, Robert Adam and George Dance the Younger. These drawings sit side by side with 9,000 drawings in Soane’s own hand or those of the pupils in his office, covering his early work as a student, his time in Italy and the drawings produced in the course of his architectural practice from 1780 until the 1830s.
