Purpose

Finished drawing for the grand staircase, c1775, executed with minor alterations (1)

Notes

The staircase survives intact with very few alterations. There were minor departures made on execution, with a variant balustrade inserted. The grisaille panel paintings, trophy panels and tromp l’oeil panels all survive, although the tromp l’oeil statues of Juno and Minerva are later additions, possibly dating to the 1920s.

Adam designed three Tuscan screens for the ground storey level, but these do not survive. King suggests that only the screen facing the stairs was ever executed, and this has since been replaced.

On the second floor there are four Ionic screens forming galleries and four niches, which currently contain tripods. As King notes Adam’s design shows them incorporating statuary.

Other examples of the use of the Imperial staircase within Adam’s interiors can be seen in the later designs for Culzean Castle and Dalquharran Castle.

Sir John Soane's collection includes some 30,000 architectural, design and topographical drawings which is a very important resource for scholars worldwide. His was the first architect’s collection to attempt to preserve the best in design for the architectural profession in the future, and it did so by assembling as exemplars surviving drawings by great Renaissance masters and by the leading architects in Britain in the 17th and 18th centuries and his near contemporaries such as Sir William Chambers, Robert Adam and George Dance the Younger. These drawings sit side by side with 9,000 drawings in Soane’s own hand or those of the pupils in his office, covering his early work as a student, his time in Italy and the drawings produced in the course of his architectural practice from 1780 until the 1830s.
