Width: 80.2cm
Depth: 30 cm
Museum number: XF381
Curatorial note
With four square legs and upholstered leather covered seat; two rungs front and back and one stretcher on each side
It is just possible that this stool is from Soane’s drawing office. However, it is lower and wider than the stool which forms part of XF56 and only the upper front and back stretchers are the same depth (3.2cm) as those on XF56 (the others are deeper). On balance it seems slightly more likely that the stool embedded in XF56 is an original early nineteenth century piece but it is always possible that there were two sizes of stool in Soane’s office since his pupils had to work in both an upper and a lower office and perhaps at desks of varying heights.
