Rectangular mirror in gilt frame, English, unknown maker, early nineteenth century

Mirror glass and gilt wood

Height: 65.5cm
Width: 17.3cm

Museum number: XF354

Curatorial note

In a narrow gilt frame. One of a pair with XF362. With signs of fixings on the back, matching those which still exist on XF362.

It is not known where these two mirrors, which have identical dimensions and identical fixings on the back, originally hung. It is possible that they were on the west wall of the ground floor Ante Room as seen in J. M. Gandy’s view of 1825 (Vol. 82, 119), but they appear slightly too small; or that they were in the Study. If so they would have been removed by Wild when he altered the door jambs between the Study and Dining Room in 1890-91.
