Rectangular joined stool, English, unknown maker, c.1625

Oak

Height: 51cm
Width: 47cm
Depth: 26cm

Museum number: XF121

Curatorial note

Of pegged construction with heavy stretchers between the four feet; turned baluster legs on tall rectangular feet, rounded on the upper corners; simple moulding to the lower edge of the seat frame; the top may be a replacement.

This stool is a neat piece of practical oak, almost two centuries old when Soane acquired it. At the time of his death it probably served as a ‘washing stool’ in the back kitchen, although a ‘small stool’ is also mentioned in the Furniture and Fittings inventory as being in Soane’s water closet off the ground floor Dressing Room.
