Rectangular mirror, English, unknown maker, early nineteenth century

Mahogany and mirror glass

Height: 165cm
Width: 58 cm
Depth: 6cm

Museum number: XF103

Curatorial note

In deeply moulded frame (the mirror glass may be original).

This mirror seems likely to be the one that is described in the Furniture and Fittings inventory as ‘in a mahogany frame’ and fixed to the door into the ‘Oratory’, although its measurements are not quite those given in the inventory (it is hard to be certain whether the dimensions given are of the mirror or the frame). The measurements are almost identical to a mirror described as being on the south wall of the Model Room (its frame is not described) and there is another in the attic described as in a mahogany frame. Until the restoration of the Model Room as part of the recent Opening up the Soane project in 2014 this mirror hung on the east wall of the front room on the second floor to the right of the fireplace.
