Relief with two cornucopias, 19th century

Plaster cast

Museum number: X80

Curatorial note

This cornucopia clearly relates to the elaborate and distinctive plaster cornucopia ornament used in the £5 Note Office at Soane's Bank of England and is probably a small-scale model for it. Until this discovery, made by Helen Dorey in December 2018, this plaster cast could not be identified as it had lost its association with its original Soane inventory number. It has now been identified as M511 described in the 1837 AB inventory as a Relief ornament for Bank of England – plaster but fortunately more fully in Copy 4 of the 1837 inventory as ‘An ornament in relief designed for the £5 note office Bank of England. Plaster’.
