Spirit lamp

Silver-gilt

Museum number: X311

Curatorial note

A small silver-gilt spirit lamp, the top decorated with grapes and vine leaves and the lid attached by a chain. The inscription around the bowl reads 'To the Memory of a Departed Friend' and the hallmarks show that it was made in 1806 by Digby Scott and Benjamin Smith. The departed friend may perhaps have been either William Pitt or Henry Holland, both of whom died in 1806.
