Charlotte, seated at a small round table in an arbour, a covered basket on the ground behind her, hands a slice of bread to one of four children. Another child hangs from her left arm, while another tilts her chair back, looking up at Werther who is standing behind her, holding her hands. A maid sits in the left foreground holding a pitcher on her knee.
