Cast of an animal paw clutching a ball, from an unidentified medieval carving
Plaster cast
Museum number: MP82
Curatorial note
The AB inventory of the Museum, 1837, describes this item as 'A paw of an animal. Carved in wood'. It is in fact a plaster cast but perhaps this may indicate that the original was a wood carving. This 'paw' also resembles an eagle's talons clutching a ball (as they often do as part of a lectern, for example, although this piece is on a much smaller scale).
