Curatorial note

This casket, according to the 1837 museum inventories was said to have been given by King Phillip II of Spain to Queen Mary Tudor. This appears to be a fictitious provenance. The miniature on ivory inside the lid depicts a cavalier bowing with a flourish of his hat to a lady, both wearing costume of around the 1630s.
