Cast of two medieval spandrel ornaments, each decorated with different foliage ornament, joined together

plaster

Museum number: M914

Curatorial note

This unusual item has always consisted of two casts joined together. The entry in the AB inventory of the collection, 1837, reads: Two pieces of Gothic spandrel ornament joined together. Plaster. What is particularly strange is that the spandrels themselves appear to be in the wrong orientation - the originals would have been fixed horizontally, presumably as a pair although the decoration is different on each one, probably flanking a door or an arch with the point of each facing inwards.
