Specimen of the Patent British Pozzolana manufactured by Arthur White

Artificial stone

Museum number: M653

Curatorial note

This specimen of a new artificial stone developed by Arthur White at his depot at 46 Millbank Street, Westminster, is accompanied by a printed prospectus/description to which it is attached with a piece of short ribbon, which appears to be original. It was almost certainly sent to John Soane by the inventor in the hope that the architect would recommend it for use in the buildings that he designed. The description is printed on what seems to be a piece of standard thick paper which has the address at the top and a strapline at the bottom 'Roman Cement in various qualities'.
