A flintstone
Museum number: M616
Curatorial note
The AB inventory (1837) records this piece as 'Flint Stone in the form of a human foot found near the base of the celebrated Pace Rock opposite the Reculvers 1829'.
Reculver is on the Kent coast. When his wife Eliza was alive Soane made summer visits to Margate, about 11 miles away, so this flint is from an area that he knew well. However, after Eliza's death in 1815 he doesnt seem to have visited Margate again and in 1829 he spent August in Bath. It is therefore unlikely that he collected this specimen himself.
