Cast of a chimneypiece from the Palace of Westminster, plaster

Museum number: M216

Curatorial note

In his 1830 Description Soane notes that this is a plaster Cast of a Chimney-piece, placed in the reign of Queen Elizabeth in one of the rooms of the ancient palace at Westminster: the original is now in the Retiring-room of the Judges of the Court of King's Bench. Soane had designed the new Law Courts at Westminster built between 1821 and 1829 so he had presumbly overseen the moving of this fireplace himself, taking advantage of the occasion to obtain a plaster cast of it. The cast is made in two sections, perhpas mirroring the way the orignal was taken apart before its relocation.
