Curatorial note

Turn-table base on which M1163 stood from the ?1920s in the Basement South Passage Recess (not shown in early photos of it in the Basement South Passage Recess c.1911). In two sections, rotating on a central metal stud, lubricated with graphite (?). This base cannot be original to the sculpture as it is not shown in 1835 views of the piece in its original position on top of the south Colonnade Adam cupboard, and, more tellingly, the sculpture will not fit in its original position with this base on it.
