Curatorial note

At the left a bearded man holds a large basket piled high with grapes on his back with the left hand and shoulders a pedum with the right; there is a cloak over both shoulders and across the chest. At the right a second bearded old man, nude, holds up a bunch of grapes with the right hand and appears to be squeezing the juice into a tub, now lost, before him.

This is a variant of the usual wine pressing and grape gathering scenes found on these terracotta plaques. Von Rohden compares this fragment to the unrestored part of a piece that appears as the title vignette in Olivieri1 . Since conditions are now more favourable for examining the Soane fragment than when Winter sketched it, as the photograph shows, this is probably not related to the Basket Carrying Pan fragment of the Kopf Collection2 .
