Curatorial note

This model represents Flaxman's design for a monument to James Robert Mosse, Captain of the Monarch and Edward Riou, Captain of the Amazon, who were killed in the British naval attack on Copenhagen led by Lord Nelson on 2 April 1801. This is a sketch for a monument in St Paul’s Cathedral but it was not commissioned. The executed memorial, in the Crypt of St Paul's, was by Charles Rossi.
