Curatorial note

William Camden was a celebrated antiquary and historian who was Headmaster of Westminster School from 1593 and founded a Chair of History at Oxford. He travelled round England gathering material for his many publications including Britannia (1586), a history of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and a Greek Grammar that was said to be famous throughout Europe.

This bust is based on that on his tomb in Poet's Corner, Westminster Abbey. headmaster in 1593.
