Design for the chimneypiece for the front drawing room, c1770-71, unexecuted (1)

This design was not executed at number 10 Royal Terrace, and instead a design was installed for which there is no extant drawing, although the tablet is duplicated from a design intended for the front parlour at number 6 Royal Terrace (Adam volume 24/38). This has a central lute, flanked by festoons and peltoid shields, it also has stiles ornamented with drops of calyx, a frieze of rosettes and festoons hung from urns, and jugs in the capitals. It survived to be photographed by the LCC in 1936, and was sold at auction in the same year.

The stiles from this design were duplicated in the chimneypiece in the front drawing room at number 8 Royal Terrace, which was photographed by the LCC in 1936, and sold at auction in the same year.
