Design for the chimneypiece for the front drawing room, c1770-71, unexecuted (1)

This design was not executed at number 8 Royal Terrace, and instead a chimneypiece was installed making use of the frieze from one design, made for the back drawing room at number 1 Royal Terrace (Adam volume 24/26), and the stiles of another design, made for the front drawing room at number 10 Royal Terrace (Adam volume 24/48). It survived to be photographed by the LCC in 1936 and was sold at auction in the same year.

The design makes use of the same frieze as that designed by Adam in 1766 for the ante room at Shelburne House (Adam volume 22/117). The Shelburne House design is inscribed in pencil with the words, D.Y. River fron[t], suggesting that Adam had considered reusing it on the Royal Terrace at the Adelphi, corresponding with the intended location of this design.
