Record drawing for the ceiling of the staircase, 1767, presumed to be as executed but not surviving (1)

The staircase is adjacent to the ante room and can be seen in Adam's plan for the house (Adam volume 43/5). It is presumed that this ceiling was executed in accordance with the design as certain features of plasterwork are recorded as having survived until 1815-17. The majority of this ceiling, however, was demolished in the 1790s in favour of a skylight.

The anthemion balusters on the staircase were originally painted blue. In 1815 they were bronzed and gilded, but during the current restoration the original colour scheme is to be reinstated.
