London: 23 or 24 Bruton Street, Mayfair, Westminster: alterations for Sir William Milner, 1791
The ground floor plan shows the existing house in black wash and Soane's alterations in red. The design suggests a chimney-piece in the entrance hall. The rear-facing room will be expanded by rebuilding the back wall. This new wall will have a tripartite (probably Venetian) window and the wall is to be positioned so that the chimney-piece is centred on the other wall. The drawing also shows a small addition at the back, with a water closet and a corner chimney-piece. This room also has a tripartite window, indicating that it is not a domestic office. The room may be intended as a dressing room or ladies' room.
As Ptolemy Dean has written, Soane attempted to help his client sell the house. Without much success in passing the property on to his other potentially interested clients, Soane made upgrades to the property in 1789 before again advertising the property for sale. Dean states that the Rate Books at Westminster City Archive confirm that Milner was only in the property for one year. Soane's Journal records that 'Mr Baker... agrees to give 3000 G' in August 1790. Soane charged Millner £36 17s 0d in 1792.
Much of Soane's work still exists on the exterior (Dean: 'the distinctive small window to the right of the front door shown on Soane's plan 40/1/20 can still be identified'), but the rear extension and staircase have been altered.
