Windsor Castle, Berkshire (Henry Wise)

1712
Planning the Maestricht Garden between Windsor Castle and the River Thames began in 1708 and was concluded in 1712, the date on the back of a presentation design by Henry Wise in the Royal Collection which represents the scheme on which work began towards the end of the following year (see Jane Roberts, Royal Landscape: the Gardens and Parks of Windsor, New Haven and London, 1997, p. 181, Fig. 175). The Soane Museum's drawing is similar in layout and drawing technique to the drawing in the Royal Collection and appears to be a preparatory version by Wise for his final presentation design. Henry Wise's role in the design and layout of the garden is described in David Green, Gardener to Queen Anne: Henry Wise (1653-1738) and the Formal Garden, Oxford, 1956, pp. 79-84.
