Preliminary design and record drawing for a ceiling for the dining room, 1769 (2)

It is not known if Adam's interior decorative schemes for Whitehaven Castle were executed, and nothing of the eighteenth-century interior survives.

The dining room ceiling design has a diamond tracery pattern with circular joints, as in Adam's ceiling designs for Oxenfoord Castle, Midlothian. According to Harris, this design 'may be recognised as a two-dimensional abstraction of medieval vaulting patterns'.
