Presentation drawings for a design for a house, c1787 (3)

Bolton gives a possible date of c1786 for the scheme, coinciding with the royal party’s arrival in Brighton. Miele however proposes a slightly later date, from the spring of 1787, citing the Prince’s debt crisis of 1786 as providing potential delay. Indeed, this seems most likely, as this would coincide with the construction of Henry Holland’s Marine Pavilion, alongside Adam’s ongoing project for W.G. Hamilton.

These presentation drawings clearly comprise a set. They are all comparable in draughtsmanship, scale and medium. They are small for presentation drawings but possibly form a preliminary set. It is possible that a second more elaborate set of presentation drawings was either intended or actually produced, but the pencil annotations here suggest that this design - with a square loggia - were abandoned in favour of a bow on the rear façade.

These drawings only show the proposed additions to the house, omitting the existing building which is orientated with a vestibule leading on to a street. The existing structure is shown in the alternative designs for the same house (Adam volume 10/124 and Adam volume 30/21-26).
