Surveys of existing house, 5 September 1797 (2)

Soane sent his pupil, Henry Hake Seward, to take surveys of Holwood in early September 1797 (drawings 11 and 12). The survey plans show the house inclusive of the two additions built by Soane from 1786 to 1797: the drawing room addition is at the south-west corner and the library addition is at the east end. The two additions book-end the old house, with canted windows projecting to the south and east fronts. The original house has an entrance hall on the south front, two small square rooms (with corner chimney-pieces) at the east end, and a stairwell at the centre of the plan. The kitchen is at the north-west corner and linked to an office wing that extends north.
