Design for the first floor, copied 23 August and altered 9 October 1802 (1)

Drawing 22 shows a design for the first floor with Soane's alterations in rough pen. Soane introduces a secondary staircase in the east range and finishings to the north-west bedroom. A survey drawing from 1802 in the archives (6/32/4, also see 6/32/7) shows the secondary stair as not yet present; another letter in the SM archive dated March 1803 refers to two plans 'of the space for staircase next housekeeper's room- which I wish to get underhand as early as possible' (6/32/17). The secondary staircase was probably built in 1803.

The north-west bedroom has a form that mirrors the library beneath, with apisidal end and an anteroom leading into the gallery. According to Soane's rough alterations to the drawing, the bedroom and anteroom have an arrangement of semicircular arches and varying ceiling heights.
