Framed view of Tyringham House (1)

The view of Tyringham shows the entrance front and part of the attached office range. The small windows on the mezzanine floor can be viewed on the east side that faces the office range. Three round-headed first floor windows centred on this wall shed light into a gallery and the principal staircase.

Arthur Bolton, former curator of the Soane Museum (1864-1945, curator 1917-45), writes about the house: 'Soane was wedded to skylines built up of horizontal lines. He, in fact, oscillated between the traditions of Adamitic classic [ie. Robert Adam], and the newer Greek School that was replacing it. There is a feeling in the flat treatment of the facades of Tyringham which recalls the antae of the Greeks rather than the pilasters of the Romans' (A. Bolton, p.14).
