Record drawings of finishings to the music and breakfast room, c. 1798 (2)

On 12 August 1797, Soane wrote to Mr Praed with drawings of finishings to the music room enclosed (Journal No 3). The music and breakfast room is at the north-west corner of the ground floor plan. Drawings 127 and 128 are copies of a working drawing and design for the room, showing its ceiling ornament and finishings. The plan on drawing 128 requires blind windows on the north wall, a detail not included in any of the finished ground floor plans. This north wall has an organ is centred between low bookcases, some bookcases sunken in the former window alcoves. The walls are lined with a frieze of an acanthus motif. The ceiling has a rosette at its centre and panels at both ends with a lozenge pattern.

The pedestal designs on the verso of drawing 128 are probably for supporting candles to light the room, such as those included in the eating room at Buckingham House (see Buckingham House drawing 22, SM 33/1/10).

The watermark on drawing 128 dates it to after 1798.
