Design for the exterior of the office court, July 1796 (2)

Soane visited Tyringham from 16 to 18 July 1796. His Journal No 3 records that he 'settled office front next garden' on 17 July. Drawings 86 and 87 show the executed design, a simple five-bay design with a projecting pedimented centre bay surrounding the round-headed arched entrance. The simple elevations are relieved by heavy mouldings at the base, string course and cornice. The side elevation has a series of blind sunken arches. Arthur Bolton writes that the front elevation of the offices resembles the north front of the Bank of England (A. Bolton, p. 14), a screen wall Soane was designing for the Bank in 1796 and 1797 (see sub-scheme 'Lothbury and Bartholomew Lane screen walls' under the second scheme in the Bank of England drawings catalogue).
