Working drawings - plans, February - 7 March 1793 (6)

Drawings 18 and 19 (plans of basement) are both dated February 1793 but differ slightly. Drawing 18 having three windows to the bay while drawing 19 has two windows. Both basement plans have a kitchen, servants hall and scullery which appear again on the ground floor plan. Since the basement height is marked 7 feet 6 inches high, these rooms must have been double height except for 'the Mezzanine over the Scullery / & Passage' noted on drawing 20. For further plans of the offices see drawings 36-41.
The garret floor has a window at each end and three dormers on the entrance front and is well provided with closets. The upper part of the large bedroom with bay window on the first floor is extended ('coved') into the roof. Drawing 35 shows the floor-to-ceiling height in the centre of the garret floor as 6 feet 8 inches.
The roof might be described as a version of a M roof (two parallel pitched roofs meeting in a valley). However, it is hipped rather than pitched but with pedimented ends. See drawing 27/28 for the unusual roof truss.
It is assumed that, except for the basement, these working drawings show the design as built or nearly so.
Drawing 18 is stamped 'IS', that is Soane's initials, as are drawings 27, 30, 32.
