Preliminary designs and designs for variant designs for the funerary monument of Lieutenant-Colonel Roger Townshend, 1760, executed with alterations (5)

Although the composition of Adam volume 54/2/9 is quite different from all of Adam's other elevations for this monument (Adam volumes 54/2/8, 54/2/27, 19/9 and 19/10) it is a preliminary design for the same structure as it makes use of the same relief panel depicting Townshend's death scene - albeit sometimes in reverse - as Adam volumes 54/2/9, 19/9, 19/10, 19/66, 19/68.

The indistinct coat of arms shown in Adam volume 54/2/8 is presumably intended to be the Townshend coat of arms of a quartered shield with shells and stars, (as in Adam volumes 19/9-10) though the arms are not included in the executed monument.

The monument was executed with alterations to these designs, but is most closely related to Adam volumes 54/2/27 and 19/9-10; with different atlantes (as shown in Adam volumes 54/7/17, 19/85, and 19/71-72), and slightly altered relief panel (the design shown in Adam volumes 19/9-10 can be seen in detail in Adam volumes 19/66, 19/68), and is topped by different military trophies. The general arrangement of the monument, however, remained unchanged, and the scroll-topped sarcophagus, strigillation, and military standard panels (as seen in Adam volumes 19/69-70) are as executed.
