Drawings 166 and 167 incorporate many of the features that appear in the final design including the central scrolled acroterion and flint piers. These two drawings could be characterised as transitional designs because they show both the four-sided triangular pedimented cap of earlier designs and the segmental pedimented cap (to the piers) of the final designs.

Drawing 166 shows the pencil addition of a segmental-pedimented domed cap on the right hand side of the elevation. A detail of the old triangular version is included above, but the pencil additions represent the beginning of a move away from earlier designs. Side gates are also included in pencil. Drawing 167 incorporates both varieties of pedimented caps (to the side gates) and (on top of the left pier) a recumbent lion.
