Design for a chimneypiece for Mr Mackenzie's dressing room, 1766, unexecuted (1)

The intended location of Adam's designs for the Rt Hon. James Stuart Mackenzie is unknown, and none of these designs are known to have been executed. See scheme notes.

The pencil inscription on this drawing, B[ack] Parlor, Front House D[urham] Y[ard], suggests that Adam had intended to reuse the design at the Adelphi, as was the case with various other chimneypiece designs of the 1760s. This particular design, however, does not correspond with any of the surviving chimneypiece designs for the Adelphi.
