Unfinished design and design for a commode for the great drawing room (now the portico room), 1778-1779, possibly executed, (2)

A further design for the Apsley commode is held in the V&A Museum (E 3225 – 1938), and is signed and dated to October 1777. Harris makes comparisons between these set of designs and those made for the commode for the Countess of Derby’s dressing room (SM Adam volume 17/24), (1774). Harris points to similarities in ornament, particularly the design of the frieze and pilasters. The Apsley commode is simpler in form, and Harris highlights how the overall effect is more elegant in comparison.
