Alternative designs for an arm chair for the Etruscan dressing room, 1776, drawing 86 executed with minor alterations (2)

According to Harris, the griffon arms of Adam volume 17/96 were too masculine for a dressing room. The design shown in Adam volume 17/95 was executed in painted beech wood as a set of eight chairs, albeit with a cane seat rather than that shown in the drawing. These chairs survive in situ.

In 1775 Adam designed similar chairs for the Etruscan room at Derby House (SM Adam volume 17/94).
