Design for a ceiling for the ante room, 1766, executed with alterations (1)

The ante room is located adjacent to the great room on the first floor. Like the great room and bedroom Adam hung the walls with red damask, allowing the ceiling to be the principal interior decorative element. A simplified version of this design, making use of the basic layout, but not all of the ornamentation, was executed and survives in situ.

According to his bill to Lord Coventry, Adam made this design for the ceiling of the ante room in January 1766, and charged £10.10s for it. Full size working drawings were also made in that month, at a cost of £2.2s., but these do not survive.

Adam also made a design for the carpet for the ante room in December 1767 and March 1768, but neither these, nor the carpet survive. As with other examples of Adam's carpets (e.g. that for Lady Coventry's octagonal dressing room) it may have been designed to echo the ceiling.
