Design for a chimneypiece for Lady Coventry's octagonal dressing room, 1766, executed with minor alterations (1)

This is the only one of Adam's surviving chimneypiece designs for Coventry House which is known to have been executed, albeit with an alternative tablet. It was carved by John Devall in 1767 at a cost of £136. According to Adam's bill sent to Lord Coventry, he made his design for the chimneypiece in January 1766, charging £4.4s. for the design, and £2.2s. for a working drawing.

The chimneypiece was removed to the back parlour in the nineteenth century when an extension to the rear caused the removal of the chimney flue to the dressing room. It is now in Brettingham's staircase hall.
