Alternative preliminary design and record drawing for a ceiling for the bow room, 1769 (2)
Although the two designs shown here are alternative, and Adam volume 8/95 is not inscribed, we know that it was intended for the bow room owing to the shape of the ceiling, with a canted bow at one end.
SM Adam volume 11/265 has been missing from the Soane Museum since 1904. From the colour transfer on Adam volume 11/266, (which came from SM Adam volume 11/265 when it was pasted onto the opposite page), it appears that the missing drawing was a finished version of the design shown in the record drawing Adam volume 11/266.
It is not known if this ceiling design was executed. Bolton only mentioned one Adam ceiling as surviving in situ in 1922, but if executed it may have been removed prior to this date.
