Working drawings for stairs, March 1805 (5)

The stair is located towards the western end of the house below the anti room to the circular drawing room.

Ptolemy Dean writes in Sir John Soane and the country estate, 1999, p.105 that the 'new stair replaced a muddled arrangement of four pre-existing staircases, but the confined space made it irregular in plan on all four [sic] levels. This inconvenience was compounded by the need to construct it of three different materials: rough Cornish granite for the intensively used flight from the basement to the ground floor, better-quality Portland stone for the ground-floor landing, and then timber above, where the thin walls woild not allow for cantilevered stone treads.'
