Design and record drawing for a chimneypiece for the state bed chamber (now Princess Mary's sitting room), 1767 (2)

The present chimneypiece is a replacement brought here from the music room. It is not known if this design was executed.

The pencil inscription on Adam volume 22/189, 2d. House / D[urham] Y[ard] River front / Back Parlor, suggests that Adam had intended to reuse the design at the Adelphi, as was the case with various other chimneypiece designs of the 1760s. In this case it was clearly intended for use in the back parlour of 2 Royal Terrace. Indeed, Adam’s extant design for that room (Adam volume 24/24) is similar to this design, making use of the same frieze and consoles.
