Alternative designs and a record drawing for a chimneypiece for the music room, 1766-1770 (4)

The design of Adam volumes 22/178 and 22/179 were executed by John Devall with alterations in 1768 but after only two years the chimneypiece was then removed to the state bed chamber. It was replaced by the surviving chimneypiece, also by Devall, which takes elements of the original design, having console stiles, calyx and lyres, but is to a different design with the head of Apollo at the centre.

Harris has suggested that Adam volumes 22/178 and 22/179 were incorrectly dated to 1769, as the chimneypiece was executed a year earlier in 1768.

It is possible that Adam volume 22/180 was designed in 1770 when John Devall replaced the original chimneypiece. The design was not used at Harewood, but it was used in the Tapestry Room at Newby Hall.
