Design for the hall, as executed, 1761 (1)

The Hall (later saloon) is to be found on the ground floor at the centre of the principal (north-east) front, behind Adam's portico. Adam thought a hall should be dignified and formal, this being made so by the Roman Doric columns on the door-frames. This was the first hall Adam designed in this style, although there were many to follow. The panels shown in the drawing were implemented but their grotesque ornamentation was not executed.
