The drawings in this group represent the earliest ideas for a sepulchral church for Tyringhham, using elevations, plan, section and details of ornament. This includes a drawing in Soane's hand where he floats his initial ideas (SM 47/3/24), before refining. The heavy-set first idea with two tiers and a round domed roof is replaced by a taller tower with windows (SM 47/3/25; SM 47/3/27). Ideas for the interior are sketched out, including the type of ceiling, and the placement of the altar (SM 47/3/25). Different schemes for ornamentation are made, with one drawing showing the exclusive use of sarcophagi (47/3/25), whilst the other uses urns (SM 47/3/27). One difficulty was defining access to the chapel. The elevations show a screen wall without any notion of an access point. One of the plans produced has two ideas for entrances which lead into the side-chapels but not the nave (SM 47/3/27). As a result, the designs are still at an early stage and produced over the course of a week end of 15 and 16 November 1800.
