Designs for the altarpiece, St John's, Bethnal Green, London, September-October 1827 [6]

The altarpiece at St John's, Bethnal Green has more drawings dedicated to it than for the altarpieces at St Peter's Walworth (SM 54/6/7-9), and Holy Trinity, Marylebone where it is seen as part of larger works (SM 54/4/17) rather than specific designs.

In part, this may be due to Soane formulating two variant designs. One has a triple pediment arrangement, the other has only one central pediment, which seems to be the version chosen. In arrangement and composition all the altarpieces for Soane's churches are identical, with the panels from left to right consisting of: The Lord's Prayer, the Ten Commandments, and the Apostles' Creed.
