Preliminary designs and finished drawings for a church, 1772-81, unexecuted (10)

Robert Adam’s scheme for the parish church at Cromarty has previously been misattributed to his brother John. The scheme was not executed, and instead George Ross built a chapel for the local Gaelic speakers in 1783. See scheme notes.

Adam’s preliminary designs for the church show the development of the design. Adam volumes 10/155 and 10/61 show a church with magnificent spires at the west end, while Adam volumes 10/157 and 10/59 show the simpler clock tower that appears in the later finished drawings (Adam volumes 45/44-49).
