Designs for pulpits, Holy Trinity Church, Marylebone, London, December 1827 (2)

Both these designs were drawn by George Bailey. It is notable that Bailey also worked on the very similar designs for the pulpit and reading desk for St Peter’s, Walworth on 10 November 1824 (SM 54/6/33; SM 54/6/34) and although not securely dated, the designs for those at St John’s, Bethnal Green (SM 47/5/29; SM 47/5/30). This means Soane entrusted Bailey with these particular elements of the church design portfolio.

The process of pulpit design can be seen in a series of drawings where Soane was gathering ideas from other churches both before and contemporaneous with Holy Trinity, and some conceptual designs (SM 47/8/3-22). One is a composite drawing of pulpits with St Peter's Walworth as the largest drawing with Holy Trinity Marylebone and others on a smaller scale (SM 47/8/14) so this is catalogued under St Peter's.
