Designs for the chimneypiece for the dining room, 1762, executed with alterations (2)

The executed chimneypiece and overmantel are very similar to what is shown in Adam volumes 22/42-43, but the capitals of the chimney stiles contain alterative trophies, the supporting shafts of the overmantel are fluted, and flank a base rail ornamented with calyx among serpentine acanthus, and a frieze of anthemia and foliage, rather than anthemia and strigils as shown.

This large overmantel is reminiscent of the work of the Adam family practice in Scotland, rather than Adam's new-found style influenced by his Grand Tour. The overmantel bas relief was executed in Rome by Luc-Francois Breton.
