Working and record drawings, June to July 1812 (8)

The drawings within this scheme are all as executed and drawn during construction. The working drawings, fully dimensioned, would have been used on site as indicated by the fact they have been folded for transport between the office and Dulwich. The record drawings would have been neat copies of the working drawings, as-built, drawn or pasted into the record book (volume 81), inscribed Dulwich College / Sketches of the Picture Gallery / the Mausoleum and Sisters' Apartments / made by the Pupils of Sir John Soane / during the progress of the Works, 1812.
There is a lack of surviving working drawings and this may be explained by George Tappen taking over in 1813. He was the ‘Architect and Surveyor to the Governors of Dulwich College Estate’ at the time of construction and as Soane worked without a fee, perhaps once his scheme was agreed, Tappen took over surveying work on site and handling the working drawings.
